How can I improve visitors to my website through Google Analytics?

Do you have Google Analytics on your website?

Not sure – so you don’t really know where your website traffic is coming from and what is of interest to your visitors.

Google Analytics is a free analytics tool, which has become the standard for most website users.  It give you a great deal of information about your website e.g. which sources of data are driving most traffic, whether it converts, demographics of your customers and how people move through the site.  

Google Analytics is therefore excellent at helping you make decisions such as:

  • Where you should be focusing your efforts e.g. if traffic from a specific source converts well, do more of it!
  • What pages are working and what pages are not working, and therefore whether you need to invest some time in improving these pages
  • You might want to do some independent User Experience Testing to see what the user really thinks, and then you can make adjustments feeling confident that this will improve the flow through your site.
  • Are you attracting the ‘right’ target audience – if so what steps can you take to change that… perhaps some “paid search or SEO.”

So Google Analytics is a highly valuable FREE tool if set up correctly from the outset.

In order to get started it needs to be set up and configured properly, as there are some quirks which often catch people out.  You will also need some training on where to fine the most useful reports and interpreting the data.

On a similar note - Does your website work on a mobile?  45% of people now start their browsing experience on mobiles.  So if your site doesn’t work effectively on a mobile you could be losing potential customers. Again, if you are not sure of the answer to this question, you can check your website by submitting your website URL to Google Webmaster Tools.
